About this vehicle

After World War II, U.S. Army decision-makers outlined requirements for a new medium tank to replace the Sherman. The Improved Medium Tank (IMT) had fairly thick sloped armor, while its low profile provided additional defense. The vehicle's weight was not supposed to exceed 45 tons, and a power-to-weight ratio of 20 h.p./t was planned. A 105 mm gun and six machineguns were considered for the tank's armament.
