Alpha damage

Alpha damage (per-shot damage)

In one sentence:

Average damage dealt by a single shell on a successful penetration.

What it means

Alpha damage — often shortened to just 'alpha' — is the damage a tank's main gun deals on a single penetrating hit. It's the most visceral, satisfying stat: hit hard, hit clean, watch the enemy's HP bar drop.

How it's calculated

Alpha = average damage shown in tank stats. Actual damage varies ±25% per shot.

Example

A standard Tier 8 medium has ~240 alpha. A Tier 8 heavy might have 320-440. A Tier 10 derp-gun TD (like the FV4005) deals 1,750 alpha but reloads for 25+ seconds.

Why it matters

Alpha defines playstyle. High alpha = ambush, hit-and-run, brawler. Low alpha = sustained fire, support, mid-range trader. High-alpha tanks force enemies to respect you with one shot; low-alpha tanks attrit them over many shots.

Common pitfall

⚠ Pure alpha doesn't win battles. A 1750-alpha gun reloading 30 seconds delivers same DPM as a 350-alpha gun firing every 6 seconds — but the second one keeps the enemy in cover constantly.
