Ammo types
Ammunition types in WoT
AP, APCR, HEAT, and HE — each shell type behaves differently against armor.
What it means
Every gun in World of Tanks fires multiple ammunition types. Choosing the right shell for the situation is the difference between a kill and a bounce.
AP (Armor-Piercing)
AP (Armor-Piercing) — standard shell. Best penetration falloff with distance, normal penetration values, cheap. Default choice for most situations.
APCR (Armor-Piercing Composite Rigid)
APCR (Armor-Piercing Composite Rigid) — higher penetration than AP, less penetration loss with distance, but expensive and often poor at sharp angles.
HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank)
HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) — fixed penetration regardless of distance, very high values, but loses penetration on screens, tracks, and spaced armor.
HE (High-Explosive)
HE (High-Explosive) — low penetration but deals splash damage even on non-penetrating hits. Used for module damage, track shots, and against very thin-armored targets.
Why it matters
Smart ammo choice can double your effective DPM. Carrying 5-10 'gold rounds' (APCR or HEAT) for hard targets is now standard practice.
