Ammo rack

Ammunition rack (module)

In one sentence:

Module storing your shells — if destroyed, your tank explodes.

What it means

Every tank has an ammo rack module that stores ammunition. When the rack takes enough cumulative damage, it 'detonates' — instantly destroying your tank regardless of remaining hit points. This is the dreaded 'ammo rack explosion.'

Where it's located

Usually in the lower hull or turret rear, varies per tank. Some tanks (T-34-85, IS-3) have notoriously vulnerable ammo racks; others (Maus, Type 5) have ammo placed deep inside thick armor.

Damage threshold

Ammo rack damage is cumulative. First hit damages it (orange icon). Second or third damage may detonate. 'Safe Stowage' crew skill + 'Wet Ammo Rack' equipment increase the threshold.

Example

The IS-3's ammo rack is at the rear of the turret. Hits to the back of the turret almost always damage it. Three damages → boom.

Why it matters

Ammo racks are one-shot mechanics. A 100% HP tank can die in one shell if the rack detonates. Always equip Wet Ammo Rack on tanks with vulnerable racks.

Common pitfall

⚠ 'Safe Stowage' (crew skill) doesn't prevent detonation — it raises the threshold. You can still die to a single critical hit if the prior hit damaged the rack.
