Shell velocity

Shell (Muzzle) Velocity

In one sentence:

How fast a shell travels in m/s — determines how much you lead moving targets.

What it means

Every shell type has its own flight speed. Fast shells (900+ m/s) fly nearly flat and need minimal lead on moving targets; slow shells (500-700 m/s and below) arc noticeably and demand serious anticipation. Premium APCR is usually the fastest option on a gun, while HE and HEAT tend to be slower.

Example

On the Tiger I's 8,8 cm gun, standard AP flies at 773 m/s while APCR travels at 966 m/s — a 25% difference in lead required against a crossing target.

Why it matters

Velocity is the hidden stat behind 'this gun feels comfortable'. Two guns with identical accuracy can play completely differently if one throws darts and the other lobs bricks.

Common pitfall

⚠ Switching between shell types mid-fight changes your lead — a common cause of missed shots after loading premium ammo.
